over the past couple of years there have been stories of comedy troupes, singers, and other entertainers traveling to guantanamo to give shows.
most recently, a group performing the musical comedy The Producers.
it makes me feel like a mouse on a sticky pad attempting to get past the imagery of contrasts that springs to mind.
one would imagine one would have to have a particularly intense and unique disposition to comply with "keeping the status quo among the guests".
i'd often wondered what went through the minds of the military authority while administering their "daily humdrummeries". knock-knock jokes?
apparently that's a possibility. mind you, the whole guantanamo issue is a bit of a knock knock joke in itself. "knock knock, who's there, no one, no one who?, no one who'd recall the antiquated term habeus corpus"... tough crowd...
guantanamo bay is cuban territory occupied by americans. former cuban ruler Batista, who was overthrown by the present administration, signed an agreement in '34 that states "until the two contracting parties agree to the modification or abrogation of the stipulations of the agreement in regard to the lease to the united states of america of lands in cuba for coaling and naval stations… the stipulations of that agreement with regard to the naval station of guantanamo shall continue in effect"

moot or hooey?
moot or hooey?
since 1959, the US has sent cheques for the lease amount every year, but the cuban government has never cashed them.
